Shanklin, Isle of Wight

Within its 23 by 13 mile span the Isle of Wight boasts a great variety of activities for all ages including historic buildings such as Queen Victoria's country residence of Osborne House; manor houses with vineyards; zoos and theme parks. England's diamond-shaped 'Garden Isle' is one of the sunniest parts of the country and and over half the Island is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the perfect antidote to city stresses without the hassle of air travel.

Shanklin itself comprises the Old Village - famous for the picturesque thatch-roofed inns, tea rooms, bars and restaurants - and the modern amenities of the rest of the town. Local attractions include two theatres and scenic walks over the Downs and along the cliff path. The wooded Chine leads down to the sea where the Island's longest bay has a safe sandy Blue Flag beach, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, canoeing and windsurfing.
